We dog owners and dog trainers have a lot to learn from our canine friends. Since 2004 I have lived with up to 7 dogs. This has given me plenty of opportunity to observe the interactions of dogs within a pack.

One thing I learned is that dogs, when living together within a home – not kenneled outdoors - have a unique and personality sensitive method of ‘laying down the law’, so to speak, regarding acceptable and unacceptable behaviors. One easy to duplicate correction especially effective for puppy nipping and biting is the 2-second gentle mouth squeeze. This involves gently holding the pups mouth closed for 2 seconds adding EH-EH if you like. The correction should be immediate and the EH-EH sharp.

I moved to Kissimmee 7 years ago in the area of Eagles Reserve and Hunter’s Creek. At that time, we had more cattle for neighbors than people, and I liked it a lot. Peaceful and beautiful (even though the air would fill with the rank odor of seemingly rotten vegetable matter used as a cattle supplement), it was a great location to raise and train dogs. There were many undeveloped fields to exercise them off leash, unrestrained. The kind of open places large dogs such as Dobermanns and German Shepherds needed to run and get a real workout.

I figured the Eagles Reserve area was so named because at one time, Eagles nested here you know, before their territory dwindled, a result of the ever increasing housing development in Osceola County over the past several years. I am always on the lookout for undeveloped areas where I can exercise, train and walk with my dogs; not just for them, but for me too. It’s relaxing, allowing for a mental break amidst peaceful surroundings. Over the past few years I’ve seen my share of Florida’s wildlife: bears, panthers, turkeys, gators, birds of many varieties, snakes, bugs, rabbits, falcons, hawks, owls, otters, racoons, possum, armadillo, deer (the owl was really cool – we stared at each other for over 10 minutes… piercing eyes it had. He was nestled amongst branches of my neighbor’s tree; I stood below looking up at him. He didn’t budge or blink the whole time. My neck got tired of looking up, so I guess you could say I gave in first.) But one creature I’d never seen, even though I lived in an area named for it, was an eagle. Until a few weeks ago.

How excited I was when I realized I was looking at an American Bald Eagle through my camera lens, on a walk with my pack. It was perched atop the tallest tree in the patch of woods adjacent to our path. The tree was dripping grey moss, and the Eagle’s white head glistened in the morning sun on the distant treetop. I never thought I’d be excited about seeing an eagle, but it IS the symbol of our nation.

I felt so lucky to have seen and photographed it before it took off and disappeared behind the trees. I look for it every time I return. No luck so far, but it took 7 years to see one for the first time; I know I’ll see one again.

Take your time. Don’t purchase a pup on “impulse”. Think about your lifestyle, and your spouse, partner, children. Are you busy, or do you sit around the house a lot? Are you the outdoors type? How much time do you have for walking a dog every day - and I mean EVERY SINGLE DAY. Are you a high energy go-getter? Do you want a dog that can swim with you, or go hiking with you? A guard dog, or fun loving companion? Is the dog for you or for your children? Do you have other pets? Ask yourself questions and answer them honestly. Try to find a breed similiar in character to what you’ve come up with. There are dog breed books available at your local library and book stores. Check on-line. Spend several hours researching different breeds. When you find the dog you think you want, sit down and everyone discuss it. Choose the dog based on everyone’s input, and commitment. When picking out a pup or adult dog, watch them from a distance and pick them up or pet them. They should show a natural curiosity without fear or aggression. Make sure you know how the tail is supposed to be carried based on breed so you’ll know if the tail is “dominant” or just curled over the back. A tail tucked between the legs could be a sign of fearful anxiety. A tail held high could be a dominant signal. Need more information? For temperament testing and evaluation of dogs in shelters or in a litter, contact TCDOA or a local professional dog trainer or animal behaviorist. Remember – never buy or adopt on impulse. You always make the wrong choice. STOP PUPPY MILLS. Don’t buy from puppy stores; instead find a reputable breeder.

As a dog trainer, I was asked my opinion of several types of training collars: Choke, Prong/Pinch, and e Collars. You may be surprised at my response.

I was asked, as a dog trainer, of my personal opinion of various types of collars and their use in training. Specifically choke, shock, and prong collars, and have included head collars and the leg harness.

Shock/e Collars and Prong/Pinch Collars are widely used and many trainers find them useful when all that is wanted is an immediate result. What I mean is these collars are often used when patience, time, and opportunity do not otherwise lend themselves to trainers or owners to correct serious unwanted behaviors, or when they are dealing with difficult to train dogs. There are many dog training professionals, and owners, who put the end result ahead of the well-being of the dog, and use these tools with abrupt certainty to get the results they want. To be fair, there are also many trainers and owners who use these tools with care, and justify their usage as necessary for the physical safety of both the owner and dog where immediate results are required and expected.

My personal opinion of the two collars – I don’t use or recommend them to my clients. They are not on my list of training options because a shock or sharp stabs in the neck to discourage unwanted behavior(s) takes away from the wholesome relationship I encourage through positive training. Some will argue that used correctly, the prong collar will only slightly pinch the dog’s neck, and the shock collar will only cause mild vibrations. Two key words here: USED CORRECTLY. It takes time and repetition to learn to use the right shock level, and we can never accurately determine how hard the pinch around his throat is going to be – until he jumps, lunges or pulls. If it is going to take time and repetition to learn to use these potentially abusive tools (did I say that?), I say why not take the time to learn NOT to use them through positive technique, reward based training.

Electric fencing. He’s running along, having a great time then WHAAPP!! What lesson did he really learn?

I am not opposed to the choke (slip) collar and prefer to use a wide nylon type, or the similar Martingale collar, instead of the metal chain collar. I’ve used regular buckle leather collars, and snap on nylon collars and have had a couple of dogs slip their heads out, getting away from me or their owner during training sessions. With a slip collar that cannot happen. As they pull, the collar tightens so the amount of pressure experienced is based on the dog’s own actions – not mine. I don’t know of a dog yet committed to performing suicide from self-suffication while on a leash with his handler. From my “trainer’s perspective”, none of the pressure the dog experiences is directly related to me at the other end of the leash. Using positive techniques, I ignore or redirect the unwanted behavior, recognizing only the actions and behaviors that I want from him. Therefore, from his perspective, I have nothing to do with the pressure (hmm).

Head collar types that encircle a dog’s face under his eyes and across his nose, pull his head to the side to keep him from moving forward – how annoying and irritating is that? I’ve seen scars on many a dog’s face from those type collars. Walks should be pleasant experiences for both dog and owner. What if dogs were able to wrap something around our face to pull our head forward so we’d move faster? Sounds like fun right? Then, there is the leg harness that restricts a dog’s leg movements. Who comes up with this stuff? It’s unnatural and in my opinion, handicaps the dog. All because the owner didn’t invest the time necessary for training. I’d say more times than not, these owners did not select the “right dog” either. Examples: A low energy person with a high energy sighthound; a couch potato with a large working breed, etc. Why punish the dog? In addition to dogs meeting our requirements, owners, you need to meet the needs and requirements of the dog you live with, and that could very well mean getting yourselves into training and getting him out of his “straight-jacket”.

I was asked for my personal opinion, and that I have given freely with no offense intended. TCDOA recognizes and respects that no two people are alike, and no two dogs are either, which is why I customize training for each client.
